Sure was different, TV-wise, when I was a kid.
Grew up near NYC, and there were four mainstream channels and eventually a UHF channel was addded.
And that's in the largest market in America.
Now, there's umpteen choices on cable.
I remember a kid's show that featured an emcee with a whistle, Claude Kirshner (sic) and a sidekick called clownie.
Can't remember the name of the show.
Think in was on WOR, channel nine.

I remember there was abc, NBC, ANDCBS..the 3 majors. channels 2,4,7
then there was pbs...channel 13....sesame street...after my time..but still remember from my much younger sister
then channels 9 and 11......local channels WOR and maybe wnew(not sure). Those local stations had "million dollar movie" "the late late show"... movies from the 50s..and before. Also local sports like the mets and knicks and rangers on those 2 stations. Alos local shows like soupy sales, 3 stooges reruns with officer Joe Bolten, and wonderama,
Also local news on those stations and also on channel 5....which was early Fox.
It stayed that way till cable came along.

I remember watching movies on WOR.....some well known, some B movies...all black and white and I would be mesmerized by even the minor role actors....I would say to myself..."these people will live forever..they may be dead now.....but TV stations are going to keep showing these films. Little did I know that cable would wash away household names like Tracey,Gable, Bogart, Cagney, to utter unknowns today. What millenial has seen a movie with any of the above. What millenial or GenX er has seen a Marx Brothers movie, WC Fields, Abbott and Costello?
My initial observation was wrong. Unless you are in a film course...there is very little chance of seeing Hepburn at her peak. Bette Davis.Lombard.
And all those folks at their peak was before my time...but I got to see them years later on local TV. Channel 9 and 11.
I laugh when I catch myself flipping through the channels and saying to myself..."theres nothing on". With 7 stations growing up.....till my graduation from college...that seemed to be enough.
When I first got cable around age 23, I think I had 36 stations. It was a box with 36 buttonson it to push physically.
This thread reminds me of another possible thread we should start..."before the internet"

Looking at your avatar...I remember "monster movies " on TV.
chiller theater.....a cheap chessey monster movie that scared the crap out of me each week as a kid. There was one that really creeped me out ..something about a giant woman.

The Million Dollar movie: lots of good, scary monster movies for a little kid.
The Crawling Eye
Godzilla
Reptilicus
We didn't have a lot, and we liked it, back in my day ...

this guy had a kiddie show...introduced cartoons..and did his old philosopher routune between cartoons. Like Soupy....it was funny for adukts as well. It was on a local station along with soupy, officer Joe Bolten, and other cartoon half hour shows like top cat, rocky and bullwinkle., underdog. looney toons.
then there were prime time cartoons like Flintstones, and Magilla gorila.

I used to watch Andy's Gang after school got out.
"Pluck your magic twanger, Froggy."
Andy Devine sort of laid to groundwork for Soupy Sales.

Romper room and Mickey Mouse, ubetcha. Saturday morning cartoons: start with star spangled banner, then Modern Farmer, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairy Tales, Sky King and others. see: filmint.nu/?p=9004I'll forever associate Saturday morning TV watching with pigging out on Oreos. Friday night was prime viewing time, with 9PM the featured time slot: loved 77 Sunset Strip.

I had a fun (as in used to laugh) aunt who used to say you betcha. She would've been in her late nineties by now. How old are you, V? Dementia material? Hello, LarryS. P.S. We miss you over at VegasCasinoTalk. Something about you're having made an ass of yourself there as well. Come on over Larry. I know that V wants you all to himself, but you are ready for the big leagues.

It wasn't that long ago that fools like you got away with crap on the gambling forums.

wow, yes andys gang......me too.
from the time I was born, I have had the influence of TV....and got life lessons form it...through cartoon or through shows like andys gang, shari lewis and lambchop, captain Kangaroo,,,and reruns of beaver, father knows best,
of course nothing like family guy or married with children.....where i might get the wrong idea as to what is proper.
I cant look at shows that I only viewed as an adult and know how they would effect me if I continually at the ages of 4-10 and figure how it would effect my view of the world and how I deal with people. ie...Married with children vs Leave it to Beaver...... or Roseann vs FATHER KNOWS BEST OR Ozzie and Harriet., or Family guy or even Beavis and Butthead vs Maglla gorilla, flintstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Two broke Girls vs Gilligans Island, Gomer Pile, Andy Griffith.
No wonder kids are fucked up
