And you could always go to the corner drug store with your mom, and they all had a 6 ft tall soinning toy rack, with cheap shot....like a bag of 20 army men for 69 cents....or the bald ma with metal filings and a magnet to make him hair, or the poor mans etch a sketch.....a black thick cardboard thingy...with a sheet of plastic over it and a pointed stick...where you can draw, and then lift the plastic film, erasing your masterpiece..and start again, a paddle with a ball attached on a rubber string,

We used to drive eight to ten hours to get to our summer vacation destination.
My folks had the sense to buy some of the cheap toys you are describing and give out one to my brother and I every hour we were on the road.
It worked well to keep us reasonably quiet, amused and busy playing.

Yes for long trips..the bald man with metal filing for hair, the poor mans etch a sketch, and as we got older, mad libs for me and my brother.
there was also these little handheld games,,,,that fit in the ppalm of your hand.....it was tiny little metal balls that you had to get to stay on tinylittle round slots...usually on a picture of something like a dinosaur or a cartoon character..You had to get all the balls into the holes at once. And regular etch a sketch and color forms traveled well.
If kids were to see color forms today..they would wonder why we wasted money on it..it just seems so simple.
