On the weekend in reno, I havve only 8 channels...one shows old time shows.
For the last few weekends i have watched an episode of Wild Wild West each week. I watched it as a 10 year old kid and thought it was ingenious. Now i view it and see the plots have big holes and the acting is horrible. It was about 2 secret service agents in the wild west who have clever gadgets to help get them out of messes that they come up against and great disguises to help them solve crimes. No one ever gets shot and killed...in fact no one gets shot usually, just alot of punching and knocking people out.
I look at wikipedia and it said that even though the show had good ratings the network cancelled it caving into congresses push for less violence. Imagine that...just a bunch of punching was considered overly violent.
but then again it was simpler less violent time.....when planes werent flown into sky scrapers and churches werent shot up
How times have changed.

I used to watch Andy's Gang after school got out. "Pluck your magic twanger, Froggy." Andy Devine sort of laid to groundwork for Soupy Sales. Andy Devine was much more geared to kiddie stuff..alot of visuals that kids loved....including me of course. With soupy although there was the slapstick (pie in the face).... .but also.you had to listen to the words and figure things out. Try to figure out why it was funny..which is great for a kid like me. I liked having the light go on in my head and say....yeah....I figured out the joke. It wasnt rocket science for adults...but for a kid you learn comic sarcasm, and nuanced humor. The above shows both the slapstick and the more quiet verbal humor . It was a show where kids could develop their understanding of humor, and adults can watch with their kids and get a few chuckles as well.

I wonder if what I seem to recall actually happened:it concerns Soupy's last day on TV.
As I heard it, as the final show was about to end he wanted to say goodbye to the production dept.
He held up his hand with fingers spread.
He touched one, said "this is for the sponsors" then folded the finger in, leaving four exposed.
He continued naming a few, til only two were left; he folded the second to the last one after thanking the appropriate person, then smiled, looked at the camera and held out his middle finger, prominently displayed, and said "this is for the producer."
Then he went off the air.
Here's my favorite clip:

I bet that the only thing left of that guy is his teeth. Another dipshit in the "puppet show of life" to make boring persons think they are laughing.

yes, that clip was not what we saw at home f course....we saw nothing on the other side of the door. That was a prank pulled on Soupy...he had no clue it was going to happen.
Heck I even would watch Jack Lalane if nothing else was on. Before Richard Simmons there was this

I enjoyed those programs.
Who knew that the installation of morality could be so painless?

we kids soaked that stuff up like a sponge. And most of us had 2 parent households and stay at home moms.
Now with alot of one parent households, or no parent households where both parents work alot........sitting in front of a tv unsupervised is the way of the world....and again children soak up what is place in front of them.
In our tv shows and sitcoms, people of authority and education were treated with respect......in current shows those people are looked on with disdain, mocked, viewed as oppressive are objects for laughter or a big target.
I remember a honeymooners episode where loudmouth Ralph befriended a little kid in the neighborhood and he went to visit the kids teacher for parents day or something like that. Here the usual brash ralph walks into the teachers classroom, meekly, with hat in hand,. Today people visit teachers on tv with confrontation in mind....with bat in hand.
Is the deterioration of society just chronicled or mirrored by tv shows...or is it fueled by tv shows. I say both.

Let's not forget Bozo the Clown, and Captain Kangaroo. Every one else has. But keep up the good work, guys. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, except when the clocks are changed ahead and back, I suppose. Let's all run to change those clocks to keep us up in the summer, and get us out of bed in the winter. Simon says, "Fuck up your bodies for the economy."

TV isn't as powerful and influential as it was when we were kids. There are many other choices today, things we never dreamed of. The worst is probably video games: nothing good can come from Grand Theft Auto. Throw into the mix the destruction of the nuclear family (half the kids born today are born out of wedlock, the poor little bastards) and what you have is a recipe for disaster.

thats true there are more layers to influence kids.
I agree graphic violent video games, devaluing life starting at an early age is another layer to help deteriorate society.
Some kids I imagine spend more time in front of video screens than tv screens. Really what life lessons can you learn from video games.
from tv they are getting fucked up life lessons, from the video games they get no life lessons along with a primer on killing without regret. And on the computer and smart phones they learn how not to communicated verbally.
Did you see a smart phone commercial, where a boy and girl meet and send some time together, and she sends to him the message that she loves him on the phone. Back in my dayI would have to send a letter by mail...and what would be the point in that. So I would have to communicate verbally....and say I love you verbally.
this moviewasnt that great but it could happen. A man is frozen for 500 years, and wakes up to be the smartest man on earth as the world has dumbed down.
