Falling for my first girlfriend (tenth grade) was the beginning of my Great Awakening.
Having good teachers teaching interesting, challenging concepts nurtured it.
It burst forth in full riot after I saw Iron Butterfly and started smoking weed.
Yeah, the old cliche': sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.
True 'dat.

THIS SAYS 1955....but it must have run a few years after that as well......just like some commercials do today......because I remember this and know the lyrics to this day

Insidious marketing to kids.
I smoked Winstons for awhile, as well as a few other brands.
Wish I hadn't.

WOW i didnt remember that one.
however we, the baby boomer kids were the first to be targeted on tv for everything from toys to food, to candy and now I see, cigs.
Alot of people from tv shows, and companies through commercials influenced us in our formative years.. for good or bad.

We were like little lab rats being experimented upon by the advertisers.
It established that yes indeed, repeatedly bombarding a receptive young audience with messages /images / information about a product they would otherwise not know about can foment demand for that product: i.e. The American Way.
The message can be overt or not initially perceived, e.g. product placement in a popular movie.

And thats the point I was making about the death of tv stars that we saw weekly in our homes.
Through the travails of Opie, Beaver, Keith Patridge, et al.....we were taught lessons, and entertained, But the lessons helped shape our lives.
We saw TV commercials over and over and it effected us.....good or bad to crave the product. And TV shows that caught our interest, that we saw over and over again....also had an effect on us.
Jim Nabors died yesterday. And looking back at his TV show, it portrayed the main character that was nice, honest, respectful, hard working, naive...but mostly came out on top even when he made stupid mistakes. Even when nefarious people tried to take advantage of his "niceness" he prevailed. And thats life lessons that are good for kids. It showed that nice guys can prevail and also showed how being naive opens you up for problems.Good lessons for growing children.
But there came a time when being "nice" and "respectful" were the antithesis of tv show characters. Heck 13 years ago , a very popular show 'HOUSE" was about a doctor who had contempt for people and verbally showed his contempt belittling and mocking patients to their face..while garnering a reputation of being a successful MD. Imagine that....the last bastion of civility...the one person we look to in life for empathy..a doctor....is shown to be an over the top bastard who achieves success by not being "nice" to people.
Married with children had no "nice" people. Often in their morality plays...."not nice" won out. Scheming, manipulation..wins out.
Like the song from "Into The Woods" says....."children will listen"
And then there are shows wth good looking women like 2 Broke Girls that have episodes where the women use their womanly bods to get what they want from men..and joke about it. All the while there are women now crying that someone grabbed their ass.

It established that yes indeed, bombarding a receptive young audience with messages both overt and subliminal about a product they would otherwise not know about can foment demand for that product: i.e. The American Way. Subliminal advertising has long since been debunked. It has no effect. Advertising is, by definition, overt. I wonder that paranoia, and internet hysteria is a symptom of long-term pot usage. Carry on.

Another commercial that had me begging my parents....but I never got it. It seems toys were easier to procure through begging.
