Ok I have a question as a non alcohol drinker or any type of drug user. I ask this also for people that go to sporting events and concerts.
I can see maybe how certain drugs can enhance the appreciation of music at a concert. I honestly dont know how alcohol does, so I will leave that aside for now.
So if you are really into a musical group. And you take drugs during the show. You may gain sensory enhancement of the music...but you lose specific detailed memory of the show thereafter. So its a tradeoff as I see it. Get an enhanced musical experience, but lose detailed memory the next day of certain banter withthe audience, or of a mental list of the set list or of recognizing and remembering a different arrangement of a song.
And with alcohol being a depressant , I have no idea why someone who is into a certain band would drink a drop of it. It doesnt enhance the instant experience..and it certainly doesnt help your memory the next day and going forward. And if you are really into your sports team.....drinking 3-4 ..10 dollar beers doesnt increase your awareness of your favorite players or the plays of the game.
For me, when I am really into a band....I dont want to miss a note, and I dont want to lose the memory of the event or the set list ingrained in my brain. But I understand some people rather take some drugs and have that tradeoff....enhance tie experience today...and lessen the memory experience. Kind of like living for today vs putting something away for the future.
So for people that drink alcohol or take drugs during games or concerts....for acts and teams you are big big fans of......what say you. Do you see it as a tradeoff at all.
to me medically its a trade off. Just a scientific fact. So is that tradeoff worthwhile, of do you ever wake up the next day and wish you remembered more
some existentialist once posed the question..."are memories something we have, or something we have lost" (i remember this from a woody allen move 25 years ago)
so by taking alcohol and drugs are people saying fuck memories...they represent something that is lost. ..good riddance...I will enjoy myself today.

Ha! Awesome question.
My first concerts sort of paralleled the beginning of my weed use, and I distinctly (dis)remember one of my first combo experiences. It was seeing Ween at the Tralph In Buffalo. I remember the ride up until the blunt, and then nothing after that until some way through the show. I fully remember blazing a fat one right in the theatre, and I vividly remember some of the songs / act during and after that episode, but I sure don't remember the end or any of the ride home. It is an odd and very interesting observation, though, and a hell of a question to ask ones' self - is the experience worth the memory? I suppose I would like to remember more of that day, but not sure it would've been as memorable without the hijinks.
Sports is another thing entirely. The point of seeing it live is to feel a part of the action. To hear the cheers and jeers, to be a part of something. It's mob mentality. You might be an "Aw, shucks" guy at home, but among 15,000 people losing their minds, it picks you up and carries it with you in a big wave of "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!1!" To become so emotional among and in front of a crowd... fuck, man, what better salve than booze? Alcohol often causes folks to act a fool on accident. Here, acting a fool is the fucking point. It's a circus pipe organ blasting out the Sabre Dance while everyone screams "LET'S GO BUFFALO" in cadence. If you want the details of a sports game, you catch it on the fantasy page at home. In person, it's for the shit show. It's whether you got rowdy and screamed in frustration, or got hype and went bonkers in jubilation. Remembering the break out pass from Jergenson for a tic tac toe between Hawerchuk and Andreychuk is insignificant.

the adrenalin rush you get from the crowd reacting to a last second 3 point shot at the half....or a perfect spiral down the field in football, or a bang bang play at the plate......is actually quelled by alcohol.
Alcohol is a depressant. It depresses that "rush"
It also depresses the part of the brain that causes you to act reserved....it depresses the "edit" button of the brain now allowing you to scream "fuck you" to the umpire or do a dance that allows the crack of your ass to show on the jumbotron.
I mentioned before that I have a friend that doesnt gamble but during a year he might spend 10k on 3 events. And he wont drink at all because he says for that money he doesnt want to miss a single play. And getting an adrenalin rush as the entire stadium or arena rises totheir feet at one time for him is not enhanced by alcohol. And medically I wouldnt expect it to be enhanced.
I remember when iwas in college at my frat parties...I talked myself into the idea that if i was seriously buzzed or drunk then I had maximized my "fun".
Just personally speaking, I dont think I would maximize my "fun" if i drank alcohol at a baseball game or a basketball game.
There is no way to quantify my fun over your fun so that pretty much leaves it up in the air.
There was a Warriors game 2 years ago where Thompson scored like 37 points in the first or second quarter. It was a record. A person who was buzzed on3 beers will tell you he was there and it was so cool. The dude sober will tell you he was there and rattle off some incredible shots that were included in that 37 points that he vividly remembers. Something to tell his kids or grandkids about down the road.
Personally I dont see it, but I look at the world through alcohol free glasses.

a little story. I was sheltered growing up. I went to my first concert by taking a 35 min train ride to NYC..to the "felt forum" which is a concert theater under madison sq garden. I saw Santana, with opening act BookerT and Pricilla.
I smelled pot and asked my friend what that smell was. He said it was pot.
So I started to hold my breath. And the more i held my breath, the more lghtheaded I got. And the more light headed I got...I was certain it was the pot. It was actually just me holding my breath.I dont remember the concert much ..never did. My brain was oxygen deprived.
So besides not taking drugs or alcohol...I highly recommend to myself ...... breathing.

People often like to modify their perception of reality, to be stimulated by a new feeling.
Ever see little kids spin around til they're dizzy and fall down? They love it!
One of the best concert experiences I had was seeing Pink Floyd in the very early 70's: I dropped acid at the beginning of the show.
No worries about not retaining a lot of specific recollection: the overall experience, at the moment, was what I cared about, not memories of the event.
I don't do psychedelics anymore, nor do I drink, but I smoke pot and find it does not affect my memory of events all that much.

It might depress the rush, but it's that depressing of inhibitions that gets the party started. That's what gets the rowdies with the no-shirt and chest paint on a 10* day in Buffalo. That's what makes it a "scene".
It's not much my style. I do like to pre-game; I'll have dinner downtown with 3 or 4 drinks, maybe catch two more on the walk, so I'm not hammered but plenty buzzed for puck drop. After that, it's nachos only. I ain't paying $300 to stand in line for the pisser.

Meh, it's not that much a shocker. I've gone to a few and I can understand why no one would go. You really, REALLY have to be into the band to enjoy it, OR just be one of those fellas that simply needs an excuse to get fucked up. I haven't been to one since '99, and I'm hard pressed to think of someone that'd get me back to one. Maybe The Steeldrivers, if they played some local old man's dive.
I've never eaten a Big Mac. Everyone's weird somehow.
